Volunteer as a GamCare Online Peer Supporter

We are recruiting Volunteer Online Peer Supporters, to provide support to both individuals who gamble and those affected by someone else’s gambling. As one of our volunteers you will use your own experiences of gambling-related harms, to support others through one or more of our peer support spaces (email, chatroom and forum).

Full training and ongoing support will be provided for this role, to enable you to use your lived experience to provide support to those affected by gambling related harms.

What will I be doing?

As an Online Peer Supporter, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Support others through our online services: Whether it’s exchanging regular emails with someone for a few months, facilitating discussion in our chatrooms, or responding to posts in our forums, you’ll play a key role in offering encouragement and motivation to those experiencing gambling harms. Please note, you can volunteer on one or more of our platforms (email only, chatroom and forum only or a combination) for more information please contact our volunteer coordinators at [email protected].
  • Create a safe, non-judgmental space: Using your own lived experience, and the training provided, you will support people to explore their own situation, set personal goals, build their support network and explore the resources and support available to them.
  • Connect individuals to further help: You’ll share information about GamCare, the National Gambling Support Network, and other services to make sure people can find the support they need.
What training is there?

Our Volunteering team will deliver a comprehensive training program providing you with the skills needed for the role and increasing your confidence to use your own experiences to support others. The training will focus on active listening, personal boundaries and safeguarding, as well as facilitation skills to help you effectively support others in online group settings.

Before volunteering with us, you will need to complete a mixture of self-directed online training and live online group training sessions delivered by our Volunteer Coordinators over a period of approximately 4 weeks.

December/January Training Dates

  • 10th December 2024 (6pm-8pm) – Introductory Session
  • 7th January 2025 (6pm-8pm) – Skills session 1
  • 14th January 2025 (6pm-8pm) – Skills session 2
  • 21st January 2025 (6pm-8pm) – Chatroom and Forum
What can I expect from GamCare?
  • Support and supervision from our Volunteer Coordinators, including monthly group supervision and one-to-one check ins when requested.
  • Opportunities to connect with other Online Peer Supporters.
  • Ongoing training and development opportunities.
  • A warm welcome when joining GamCare as part of our ambitious team, supporting those impacted by gambling related harms.
Who can apply for this role?
  • Those with Lived Experience of gambling related harms (including those affected by someone else’s gambling).
  • Those currently in positive, sustained recovery for at least one year from gambling related harms.
  • Access to a reliable internet connection, a computer and a confidential space.
  • Over the age of 18 and reside within the United Kingdom
  • Availability of between 1-2 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months
