Debt Awareness Week – No Judgement
Topics
It’s Debt Awareness week, and this year’s theme is “no judgement” – aiming to challenge the stigma surrounding debt.
Talking about money isn’t easy. If you’ve ever split the bill on a meal out (even though your friend had three courses and you had one!) or noticed the gas meter going down much faster than it used to, you’ve probably come up against one of these conversations.
Many of us avoid them, which just makes it feel like it’s even harder to broach. We’re here to give you a place to start.
Most people have had debt at some point. Most people don’t openly discuss it, so if you’re struggling with debt, it can feel very lonely.
Gambling can make this even more complicated. People tell us they have run up debt used to cover their living expenses due to gambling, or that they lost money gambling that they needed for repayments. This can lead to gambling more to try and pay it off. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone.
Debt advice
Our factsheet about debt advice talks you through what to expect if you do reach out for debt advice, and where you can speak to someone in confidence, for free. Debt advisers are used to speaking with people in all sorts of situations. They will never judge you, and nothing will shock or surprise them. They may be able to offer solutions you hadn’t thought about before.
A lot of people worry about their credit score, however talking with a debt adviser will not impact your credit score in any way. It won’t be on your credit file either. Remember – it is absolutely your choice whether you choose to go ahead with any actions your debt adviser suggests, and which you choose.
