Taking Control of Gambling Harm and Debt
Topics
Each year, Debt Awareness Week aims to increase awareness of debt, and the advice and solutions available to help. Our friends at StepChange, a debt charity, share how to get support.
At StepChange, we understand that asking for help can be tough, which is why we work closely with GamCare.
If you – or a loved one – are struggling with gambling harm that’s impacting your finances, it can often feel like it’s all-consuming.
Reaching out to GamCare is an important first step in taking control of your situation. GamCare can provide the support and guidance you need to manage your relationship with gambling, and StepChange can help you take back control of your finances.
Understanding your debt situation
No matter what your debt situation is, StepChange is here to offer non-judgmental, confidential advice.
Once you’re ready, we’ll work with you to find a debt solution to manage your debt alongside any additional support you’ve received from GamCare. We understand that there can be a stigma around gambling itself, but rest assured we don’t need to know how your debt was created, we’re just about helping you resolve it.
The process is straightforward, and you’ll have as much or as little support as you’d like. We’ll ask about your debts and any actions creditors have taken, and we’ll provide appropriate solutions to ensure you can make an informed decision.
Taking steps towards dealing with debt
Ultimately, the decision is yours, but we can also suggest additional support you might not have considered, such as an application for Breathing Space, potential benefits or hardship grants that could help with certain debts.
We’ll work together to create the most suitable plan for your situation, ensuring that the steps you take are clear and manageable.
We’re committed to treating everyone with respect and understanding. If you’d prefer not to discuss your personal circumstances right away, that’s fine – we respect your privacy and pace.
Although we often hear it’s a concern, getting free debt advice doesn’t impact your credit rating. We don’t tell anyone you’re accessing debt advice unless you ask us to, and your credit file remains unaffected. However, certain debt solutions may show up on your credit file – when you go through free debt advice, your advisor will alert you to the pros and cons of all available options.
Moving towards freedom from debt
Debt Awareness Week is an annual reminder that no one should feel ashamed for seeking help, so if your debt is causing increasing stress, it might be time to access the free support available.
Depending on what feels most comfortable for you, there are several ways you can get support. You can reach us online through the StepChange website, speak over the phone, or use the chat service on your online account.
While StepChange can help you manage your debt, if you or a loved one are experiencing financial issues due to gambling harm, GamCare can support you to address the root cause. Contact the National Gambling Helpline 24/7 on 0808 8020 133 or live chat on the website for free, confidential advice and support.
