Talk Money Week 2024: Taking Control of Your Finances After Gambling
This year, Talk Money Week runs from 4th to 8th November 2024, and we’re taking the opportunity to share insights from our Money Guidance Service on a topic many of our clients face: managing their finances after reducing or stopping gambling.
Talk Money Week is a nationwide initiative encouraging open conversations about money across the UK, with the hope that these discussions will continue year-round.
If you’ve recently quit gambling or cut back on your spending, you may have found yourself with more disposable income and free time than you’re used to. While this is a positive change, it can also feel overwhelming. You’re not alone if you’re unsure of what to do next with your newfound financial freedom.
Here are some common concerns we hear from people who’ve reached out for help:
- Temptation to spend or gamble again: A fear of slipping back into old habits with easy access to money.
- Guilt around making purchases: Feeling uncomfortable spending money on yourself, especially larger purchases, because you’re not used to having extra funds.
- Uncertainty about financial planning: Not knowing how to start thinking about saving, pensions, or future financial security.
- Exploring new hobbies: Considering which hobbies or interests to pursue now that you can afford them.
- Managing unaccustomed financial freedom: Generally figuring out how to handle money when it’s no longer tied to gambling.
If any of these concerns sound familiar, our Money Guidance Specialists are here to help you navigate these new challenges. Our team can guide you on how to:
- Identify your financial priorities: Figuring out what’s most important to you now.
- Set financial goals: Whether it’s saving for a big purchase or planning for a long-term dream, we can help you outline your goals.
- Protect your money: Discuss strategies to safeguard your funds from future temptation.
- Plan for the future: While we’re not financial advisors, we can help you explore what’s out there in terms of savings, pensions, and other financial products.
This year’s Talk Money Week theme is Do One Thing to improve your financial wellbeing. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming; taking even a small step can create a ripple effect for your financial future.
