GamCare responds to newly appointed prevention commissioner

GamCare, founder of the National Gambling Helpline, welcomes the Government’s announcement today of OHID (the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities) as the new Commissioner for the prevention of gambling harms. This appointment represents a significant step forward in addressing gambling harms through a public health lens.
On average, people calling the Helpline have gambled for 11 years before seeking support with GamCare, which is why the emphasis on prevention being better than cure is so important. With OHID’s focus on public health and the sustainable funding provided through the new statutory levy, GamCare looks forward to a strengthened and coordinated approach to prevention at local, regional and national levels.
There will be much work to do to ensure that the experience and expertise of the third sector is embedded firmly in the ecosystem of future support for those who need it. During the transition to the new statutory system, GamCare remains committed to maintaining and developing our vital services to support anyone experiencing gambling harms. Last year alone, 55,000 people called GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline, and through its education and prevention programmes, GamCare reached almost 65,000 children and young people, parents and professionals.
